Cores come from the Fell bosses that guard Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells, or from an alchemy recipe. A nexus is the rarer upgrade material for the Flame Altar.

Which one the altar wants

Flame Altar level 2 wants 1 Shroud Core and grows the cube from 40 to 80. Level 3 wants 5 cores and reaches 120. Level 4 wants 5 Shroud Nexus and reaches 160. Those counts are the wiki’s upgrade table. 1.0’s changelog separately raises how many altars you may place, up to 16 at Flame 11. That is a count of buildings, not a change to this recipe.

Questions

Can I craft a core?

Yes. The Alchemist recipe uses 10 Shroud Spores and 10 Shroud Liquid for one core. The wiki’s level 5 is an item level, not a documented alchemy-skill gate.

What drops a nexus?

Fell Monstrosity and Fell Sicklescythe, plus the alchemist recipe.
