Yes, there are NPCs. You rescue them in the world and call them home with the Summoning Staff. Pets and livestock are part of the same life-at-base idea.

Who you can bring home

Documented survivors include the Blacksmith, Alchemist, Carpenter, Hunter, Farmer, Collector, Bard (Valory), Barber (Elio Ricci), Fisher (Captain Melville Fontane), and a Lunar New Year trader. Cats and dogs are pets from Update 4. Keeping them indoors is a base-building problem, not a menu toggle the wiki reduces to one button. The Barber, in Revelwood’s Elder Night Sanctum, also switches body proportions between classic and a more realistic set as of 1.0.
